Check Whether ASTM A106 Is the Right Seamless Pipe Route

ASTM A106 is not the only seamless pipe route. Before you place an order, you should confirm whether your project needs A106 for high-temperature or pressure service, API 5L for line pipe, A333 for low-temperature service, A53 Type S for general seamless pipe, or seamless tube routes for boiler and mechanical use.

Supply Focus

A106 Pipe Supply Should Start from Grade, Schedule and Service Condition

The main risk in ASTM A106 pipe purchasing is quoting it as ordinary seamless pipe without checking service condition. A106 is commonly used for high-temperature or pressure-related service, so your quotation should confirm grade, schedule, wall thickness, end finish, test requirement, MTC acceptance and whether Grade B or another grade is required.

For High-Temperature Service

You can review ASTM A106 when the pipe will be used in high-temperature or process piping applications.

For Pressure-Related Lines

You can confirm schedule, wall thickness, pipe ends and document requirements before comparing pipe prices.

For Grade B Inquiries

You can send ASTM A106 Grade B requirements with OD, schedule, length, MTC and inspection details for route review.

For Importers and Project Buyers

You can review pipe marking, heat number, bundle labels, packing method, loading photos and export documents before shipment.

Route Comparison

ASTM A106 vs A53 Type S, API 5L, A333 and Boiler Tube Routes

These pipe and tube routes can appear in similar RFQs, but they do not mean the same application. Before you approve a quotation, you should confirm which standard is required by your project document or final user.

Standard / Route What You Usually Mean How It Relates to ASTM A106 What You Should Confirm
ASTM A106 Seamless Pipe Seamless carbon steel pipe for high-temperature or pressure-related service. This is the main route for this page. Grade B is commonly requested, but grade and schedule must still be confirmed. Confirm Grade A / B / C, OD, schedule or wall thickness, length, end finish, test requirement and MTC acceptance.
ASTM A53 Type S Seamless pipe under ASTM A53 route for general pipe applications. A53 Type S is not the same purchasing route as A106, even when both are seamless carbon steel pipes. Confirm whether the project specifies A106 or A53 Type S, and do not substitute without buyer approval.
API 5L Seamless Line Pipe Line pipe route for oil, gas, water or pipeline-related projects. API 5L focuses on line pipe logic, PSL level, line pipe grade and pipeline requirements rather than general A106 service. Confirm PSL level, grade, OD, wall thickness, bevel, coating, marking and inspection requirement.
ASTM A333 Pipe for low-temperature service where impact-related requirements may matter. A333 should not be treated as a normal A106 replacement. It is used when low-temperature service is required. Confirm low-temperature condition, grade, impact requirement, project document and certificate requirement.
A179 / A192 / A210 Tube Route Seamless tube routes for heat exchanger, boiler or related equipment applications. These are tube routes and should be reviewed by equipment requirements, not quoted as ordinary A106 pipe. Confirm tube standard, OD, wall thickness, length, test requirement and final equipment use.
Mechanical Seamless Tube Seamless tube stock for machining, sleeves, bushings, cylinders or industrial components. This route may need machining allowance, tolerance or different tube specification instead of A106 service route. Confirm final machined use, OD, ID or wall thickness, length, tolerance and surface condition.
ERW Carbon Steel Pipe Welded carbon steel pipe for general fluid, construction, stock and distribution. ERW pipe should not replace A106 seamless pipe if your project specification requires seamless construction. Confirm whether welded pipe is acceptable before changing the supply route.
LSAW / SSAW Steel Pipe Large diameter welded pipe route for piling, water transmission and project pipe supply. This is a large welded pipe route and should not be confused with A106 seamless pressure pipe. Use LSAW / SSAW when the project requires large diameter welded pipe, not A106 schedule pipe.
If your project document clearly specifies ASTM A106, do not replace it with A53, API 5L, A333, ERW or another route without approval. Send the standard page, grade, size, schedule, service condition and document requirements so the correct supply route can be reviewed before pricing.

FAQs

Common Questions from ASTM A106 Seamless Pipe Buyers

What information should you send for an ASTM A106 pipe quotation?

You should send grade, OD or NPS, wall thickness or schedule, length, end finish, service condition, quantity, MTC requirement, packing request, destination port and delivery schedule.

Is ASTM A106 the same as ASTM A53 Type S?

No. Both can be seamless carbon steel pipe routes, but they are used under different standard logic. If your project specifies ASTM A106, do not replace it with ASTM A53 Type S unless the buyer or project document allows it.

When should you use API 5L instead of ASTM A106?

API 5L should be reviewed when your project is line pipe for oil, gas, water or pipeline-related service. It uses line pipe grade and PSL logic, which is different from ASTM A106 high-temperature or pressure-related pipe logic.

When should you choose ASTM A333?

You should review ASTM A333 when the pipe is required for low-temperature service and the project requires low-temperature impact-related document review.

Can ASTM A106 pipe be supplied with beveled ends or cut length?

Plain ends, beveled ends, threaded ends, end caps and cut-to-length requirements can be reviewed according to size, wall thickness, standard and order quantity.
